Scholarly publishing practices have been transformed by digital technologies over the past twenty years. Indeed, the funding models of academic journals, both in Canada and abroad, are being challenged by the transition towards open access, which is picking up speed and seems set to become standard practice.
The study “Canadian Scholarly Journals in the Humanities and Social Sciences” (also available in French) was designed to shed light on these trends and other key elements currently affecting scholarly journal publishing in Canada. This study was conducted over the course of 2019-2020 under the direction of Vincent Larivière, Professor at the Université de Montréal and Canada Research Chair on the Transformations of Scholarly Communication, in collaboration with expert consultants and Érudit’s research team.
We have developed a summary of this study (in English and in French) that briefly highlights key points which illustrate the current reality of Canadian scholarly journals.
